How Chinese Astrology Works: The Four Pillars of Destiny

- Login as member, you should land at the dashboard

- On the Steps menu on top, select "1 Understanding Self"

This framework draws from Dato Joey Yap’s interpretation of the BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny) system, a modern application of classical Chinese metaphysics for self-awareness and life strategy.
The Four Pillars of Destiny, also known as Ba Zi (八字), is a sophisticated system in Chinese astrology that reveals a person’s innate personality traits, strengths, and life tendencies using their birth date and time. It’s called "Four Pillars" because it constructs a profile based on the year, month, day, and hour of your birth, each forming one pillar.
Hence, these are the only information required to understand your personality and career possibilities:
- Date of Birth, based on Gregorian calendar, as recorded in your birth certificate. You do not need to convert these into Solar calendar used by the Ba Zi system. Nor do you need to adjust timezone based on place of birth. Our system will convert these automatically.
- Time of Birth: this is optional. It is important element in general Ba Zi reading, but not critical for your career reading.
- Gender: this is important to read your annual luck energy.
- For Twins: If you are one of the twin, please select the type of the twin you are. This could be critical information to understand your personality and career possibilities.
Then click the [Analyse] or [Generate] button to generate your astrology profile.
📖 What Are the Four Pillars?
Each pillar represented the following:
- Year Pillar – your ancestry, roots, early childhood, social surroundings
- Month Pillar – your parents, upbringing, career potential -> This is what we're interested in.
- Day Pillar – your core self, personality, and spouse
- Hour Pillar – your ambitions, children, late-life fortune
🧠 Is There Science Behind It?
While Four Pillars of Destiny originates from metaphysical traditions, modern interpretations have begun exploring its psychological and behavioral correlations. Think of it like a cultural framework for personality typing, similar in purpose to tools like MBTI or Enneagram.
Each element and pillar reflects observable personality traits, which have been cross-referenced with behavioral tendencies over centuries of pattern recognition. This large-scale, longitudinal "human data" approach shares similarities with today’s data science: identify patterns, build profiles, and apply insights.
Neurologically, people resonate with different rhythms, energies, and temperaments. Ba Zi provides a symbolic system to describe those differences. While it’s not considered a science by Western standards, its longevity and consistency suggest that it taps into real psychological patterns that can be valuable for reflection, coaching, and career alignment.

In the same way a GPS needs your location to map a route, the Four Pillars use your birth info to reveal the terrain of your personality. From there, you decide how to walk the path.
